Description
In 1890 Jules Wagemans established himself as a upholsterer in Maastricht. His son Henricus Wagemans converted the company into furniture factory 'H. Wagemans & Van Tuinen. In 1928 the brand name 'Artifort' was introduced that stands for Art and Comfort. Artifort breaks trough with Epeda inner suspension in the 1930s. This suspension is woven from one steel wire and increases comfort and durability while saving production time. Initially, Artifort makes classic wooden furniture. In the 1950s, Artifort started the path of design with the Penguin and Congo chair designed by Theo Ruth. In 1958 Kho Liang Ie was appointed as aesthetic adviser. Kho Liang Ie designs the new Artifort logo and attracts designers Pierre Paulin and Geoffrey D. Harcourt. Pierre Paulin introduces new techniquesand uses brightly colored stretch fabric to upholster his designs with organic design. Geoffrey Harcourt designs variousoffice furniture for Artifort that have been internationally successful.
